KOLKATA: Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has sought to sensitise the police force to their duty towards society. In the aftermath of the tragic incident in Barasat where a teenager lost his life trying to protect his sister from three young men, the Director-General of Police is sending out instructions to ensure that policemen react more sensitively to the needs of society. The girl had been riding her brother's bicycle back home from work in the city around midnight. As the incident unfolded, the girl ran to get help from three policemen who were guarding bungalows nearby, but her pleas fell on deaf ears. The police constable who ignored her pleas has since been suspended and a young man suspected to have been involved in the incident has been arrested. Condemning the incident, Governor M. K. Narayanan on Thursday called for exemplary punishment. “I want strongest possible action against the culprits and delinquent police.” The Chief Minister, who rushed to meet the family on Wednesday soon after the entire matter came to light, took a meeting on Thursday where he highlighted the need for sensitising the force and restoring public confidence in it, Home Secretary G.D Gautama told reporters. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh, Director-General of Police Naparajit Mukherjee and City Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti besides Dr. Gautama. The need for taking action against the trade of illicit liquor aided by the police and excise department officials was also stressed by the Chief Minister. To questions on the report submitted on the incident by the District Magistrate, Dr. Gautama said that while he could not share the details of the report without impinging on the investigations now being conducted into the incident by the CID, preliminary reports suggest that the area was prone to incidents of snatching and the three men suspected to be involved in the sordid episode were drunk.
