VIZIANAGARAM: The Communist Party of India (Marxist), Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham and A.P. Rythu Sangham have opposed the public hearing scheduled for Friday on the proposed 300 MW thermal power plant by the NCS Sugars Limited at Latchaiahpeta in Sitanagaram mandal. CPI(M) secretariat member Reddy Srirama Murty told this correspondent that the public hearing was planned once again even after people of Latchaiahpeta, Reddivanivalasa, Kinthalavanipeta, Gummadivaram, Antipeta and Sitayyapeta had opposed the proposal in May last year as they had already been experiencing pollution from the sugar factory. He said the site on which the plant was proposed was meant for raising greenery. But, the factory management influenced ruling party leaders and now trying to go ahead with the plant, he said. Complaints Though complaints had been lodged time and again with the district administration and the Pollution Control Board, the factory management made no attempt to control the pollution levels, Reddy Venu, another CPI(M) leader, said. Health problems If the management was permitted to set up the plant, people in the said villages would face severe health problems. NCS Sugars has proposed to invest Rs.1,500 crore for the plant and its representatives were trying hard to create awareness among people in the said villages about the pollution control measures to be taken at the thermal plant.
