COIMBATORE: The duration of load shedding in Coimbatore went up to three hours, from the two hours that was in force, on Thursday. An official of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company (TANGEDCO) told The Hindu here that the total demand for electricity in the State had gone up. Load shedding was implemented according to availability of power. With shortage in power availability, load shedding was increased by half an hour in Coimbatore only on Wednesday since it was a holiday. However, today it increased by an hour for a total shutdown of three hours. Except in the last two days, power supply was disrupted for about 20 minutes during the night. For agricultural connections too, the duration of load shedding had increased. Farmers had to go without power during daytime (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) for up to four hours. Two-phase supply was available for four hours and three-phase for four hours. Generally, complaints of low voltage supply between 10.30 a.m. and 12 p.m were reported. In Coimbatore, the power demand was 1,350 MW a year ago. Now, it was about 1,500 MW. The demand had increased because of several factors. For instance, use of air conditioners was high during the summer. Farmers had started plantation operations for short-term crops. The industrial consumption had also gone up. The area under Coimbatore Zone had expanded, especially in the Tirupur circle. Places such as Kangeyam and Uthukuli were brought under Coimbatore region, the official said.
