THANJAVUR: Graduates should not forget our rich heritage, culture and tradition, and they should protect our age old systems such as joint family, said K.Muthuchezhiyan, Vice Chancellor, Periyar University, Salem, here on Thursday. “Youth should have a sense of pride of being an Indian,” he said while delivering the convocation address at Rajah Serfoji Government Arts College.

Milestone

Convocation is a milestone in the career of graduates. "You are stepping out of the comfortable college life and enter a society which may be turbulent sometimes. You have to face challenges and it can be overcome with character and values," Mr. Muthuchezhiyan said. "Career orientation is important, but it should not be at the cost of your family."

He called upon the youth to work for the uplift of labour class and the downtrodden. Quoting Swami Vivekananda, he exhorted the youth to move forward.

He conferred degrees on 766 candidates of which 551 are under-graduates, 169 post graduates and 46 M.Phil holders.

The disciplines included mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science, chemistry, bio chemistry, zoology, English, economics, commerce and BBA.

R. Ambikapathy, Principal, appealed to the graduates not to abandon their parents or in-laws when they become old. R.Durai Rajan, Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry, welcomed the gathering.
