Passengers urge authorities to set up railway station at Parvathipuram

Staff Reporter

Proposal put in cold storage by Railways, says association

Nagercoil: A cross section of people, including those from Thiruvananthapuram, has urged the Ministry of Railways to set up a railway station at Parvathipuram, the middle portion of Nagercoil town.

According to sources, Chunkankadai is a hub for educational institutions and hence the most of the teaching community and non-teaching community from Thiruvananthapuram used to travel to this district by buses. Moreover the traffic congestion within the town limit could be reduced with the setting up of a railway station at Parvathipuram.

There were two railway stations _ one at Nagercoil Junction at Kottar and Town Railway Station at Vetturnimadam. Owing to lack of bus facility, passengers were being put to untold hardship.

The long-pending demand of the people of the district and neighboring Kerala to set up a railway station at Parvathipuram was rejected by the railway authorities under the pretext of citing the overbridge (1/3 gradients) situated near the proposed railway station.

Unfortunate

Even as there were many railway stations situated near the overbridges above 1/3 gradients in different parts of the country, it was unfortunate that the Railways were reluctant to implement this project, said Consumer Protection Association president S.R.Sree Ram.

Last year, the Railway Ministry had announced in the budget allotment of Rs. 5.5 crore for converting Nagercoil town Railway Station into a crossing station and Junction Railway Station into goods shed. These projects are yet to be implemented.

Moreover, it was proposed to set up a railway station at a cost of Rs. 19 crore at Parvathipuram. The project has been put in cold storage citing that there was a railway station at Veerani Aloor within 1.5 k.m.
