“State doing its best for welfare of minorities”

Tuticorin: The State Government led by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi is doing its best for the welfare of the minorities, according to Father Vincent Chinnadurai, Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Minorities Commission.

He thanked Mr. Karunanidhi and Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for having consented to provide government subsidy for the upgraded minority educational institutions established in the State after1991.

Towards scholarship, a sum of Rs. 40 crore was given to beneficiaries across Tamil Nadu during the previous year, Fr. Vincent told the media after holding a grievances redressal meeting with the minorities and representatives of minority educational institutions at the Collectorate here on Thursday.

As for Tuticorin, financial assistance of Rs. 5 crore was extended towards scholarship to encourage students for promoting education. Education loans to the tune of Rs. 34.7 lakh were provided to students of the district.

More such assistances would be given.

Priority would also be accorded for caste-based benefits.

A representation to this effect was made and the Chief Minister had accepted the demand.

Job recruitments of the minorities had been executed accordingly and a team was engaged in assessing the vacancies in government organisations, he said on a query.

Six hostels were functioning for women from minorities.

Earlier, the minorities and representatives of various minority educational institutions aired their grievances and the panelists assured of sorting out the issues expeditiously.

Minorities Commission Member Secretary P. M. Basheer Ahmed, V.M. Moulia Methabal, Member of the Commission, D. Ravichandran, District Revenue Officer, and officials from the department of education attended the meeting.
