Foundation stone laid for bypass road at Rasipuram

Staff Reporter

Namakkal: Minister of Highways and Minor Ports Vellakoil M.P. Saminathan laid the foundation stone for a bypass road at Rasipuram for a stretch of 13.67 kilometres from Kakaveri to Ponkurichi on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering after launching the works, the Minister said that the first phase for a stretch of 6 km at an estimate Rs. 18 crore, from the Highways Department, would be carried out this year.

Allocation for the remaining distance of 7.67 kilometres would be made in the following year, he added.

Mr. Saminathan noted that an average daily movement of 22,626 Passenger Car Unit (PCU) was recorded in Rasipuram and added that this heavy density added to the traffic congestion in the town that has a large number of industries and educational institutions.

The first phase from Chandrasekarapuram to Anaipalayam is expected to be completed in nine months, he said.

Tar road would be laid for a width of seven metres in the two-lane road while the total road width would have an additional five metres (vacant space), giving room for future road-widening works, he added.

According to him, the highways department has spent Rs. 4.1 crore to procure 30.46 hectares of land from private parties for the bypass works, while 5.09 hectares of land have been obtained from the revenue department.

The bypass would run through 13 small bridges and eight water ways. The Minister said that roads laid using the latest technology and raw materials such as quarry dust have the capacity to bear weight up to 50 tonnes.

Efforts taken by the State government to strengthen the road and water ways and carrying out maintenance works has attracted investments, he said. A ring road in Namakkal town to put an end to traffic congestion would soon begin, Mr. Saminathan added.
