Footpaths near metro stations to be pedestrian-friendly

Amenities:Footpaths will be developed up to
Those disembarking from the Namma Metro can step out on to levelled pavements at the stations. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) will take steps to ensure that footpaths outside the stations are pedestrian-friendly.
BMRCL spokesperson B.L.Y. Chavan said that they would develop footpaths up to 150 metres from the entry and exit points of the metro stations. “This will be done at our own cost. We will ensure that all passenger amenities are provided for in the areas surrounding the metro stations. This would also include pedestrian crossings at the road level,” he said.
The pedestrian crossing would be put in place wherever necessary after consultation with the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the traffic police.
About developing the remaining footpaths between the stations, he said that no decision had not been taken. “These decisions, including cost-sharing, will have to be taken in consultation with the BBMP and other civic agencies at the highest level.”
Meanwhile, BBMP officials said that they wanted BMRCL to develop the footpaths all along the stretch between Byappanahalli and M.G. Road.
“They have agreed to develop footpaths near the stations. We will discuss it with the BMRCL authorities during the coordination committee meetings,” they said.
BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah said that the civic authority would consider sharing the cost for the development of footpaths. “They have intimated us about developing a small stretch near the stations. If they want to develop pedestrian crossings, they will have to take the BBMP on board. We have no objections since the citizens will benefit,” he said.
Meanwhile, BBMP officials said that after the completion of Namma Metro's Phase One, the civic authority and BMRCL would concrete the roads below the pillars of the Metro.
They said that “white topping” would be taken up on the 14 arterial roads under the Metro tracks.
A concrete layer of around 150 mm thickness would be laid on the roads instead of the regular bitumen topping. “The detailed project report is being prepared and the cost will be shared by both the agencies. The BMRCL and teh civic body have a 50:50 cost sharing understanding for the road restoration projects,” they added.
