Police, media and public in a tizzy over cracker blast

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The sound of a mysterious blast from a gutter near the PES Engineering College on Ring Road near Nayandanahalli sent the police, media as well as the general public into a tizzy on Friday.

By the time the police rushed to the spot and dismissed the sound as a “cracker burst” after conducting preliminary investigation, sections of the electronic media went to town with the “breaking news”, leading to widespread speculation.

Apart from the police officials, Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) officials and the media, who made a beeline to the spot, a large number of people gathered around the gutter from where the sound had emanated.

Waste dump

However, police said that the sound had originated from a cracker that had been burst in the gutter by some locals. The engineering college authorities as well as locals dump the waste in the gutter while Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) personnel usually set it on fire.

“The local people may have burst the cracker near that waste, leading to the sound. We don't know who burst the cracker”, police said.

Advice

“Media should be responsible before flashing ‘breaking news'. A good number of cricket fraternities are in the city from past few days as the World Cup cricket matches are nearing. We did not want to take risk and hence conducted a thorough investigation even if we knew that it originated from a cracker,” a top police officer said.
