HYDERABAD: The eighth edition of Bio-Asia slated to be held here between February 21 and 24 will be marked by investments to the tune of Rs. 3,000 crore. A record number of registrations were received from 24 nations, Minister for Major Industries J. Geeta Reddy said here on Friday. At a pre-event press conference, she said the investments included about Rs. 1,000 crore over a period of time from Lonza Knowledge Centre, Switzerland, which had already bought land in Genome Valley near here for a research and manufacturing facility. The other major sources of investment include the Lepakshi Knowledge Hub in Anantapur district, Sri Biotech that will launch its Integrated Discovery Centre, a unit for stem cell banking and research from Pacific Hospitals and Trans-Scell Biologics, a cancer research centre and hospital with French collaboration billed as the largest such facility in India coming up at Shamirpet. Dr. Geeta Reddy said the Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) Special Award this time will go to D.S. Brar, Promoter Chairman, GVK Bio, Roger L. Williams, CEO, US Pharmacopeia and Anwar Nasim, Chairman, National Commission on Biotechnology, Pakistan. Award to Anji Reddy The Chief Minister will give away the International Genome Valley Excellence Awards to K. Anji Reddy, Chairman, DRL, for his contribution to the life sciences industry and the Beijing Institute of Genomics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China for its work in human genome sequencing.
