“Sugar mills engaging in unhealthy competition”
Staff Reporter
Tiruvannamalai: Sugar mills are engaged in unhealthy competition, including procurement of cane from areas earmarked for other mills, Collector M. Rajendran said on Friday.
Concluding the district-level Farmers' Grievance Redressal Day meet held here, he said: “The sugar commissioner has issued a warning to erring sugar mills but we have written back asking for the Act and Section under which the erring sugar mills can be prosecuted. Once we get a reply, we will be taking strong action.” Earlier, members of the pro-AIADMK faction of the Indian Tillers and Toilers Party staged a walkout from the forum saying farmer leader Vallam D. Pandurangan was attacked 10 days ago for raising certain issues at the forum.
S. Balaraman, district president of the Tamilnadu Vivasayigal Sangam, complained that whenever there were problems with electric transformers in farm areas, TNEB officials were reluctant to repair them. This affected crops and resulted in farmers' suffering. “In a recent instance, transformer failure in Udayananthal village near here went unattended for three days,” he said.
District Revenue Officer C. Kadiravan was among the officials present at the meet.
