“Rs.2.50 crore spent for minority students”

Staff Reporter

For development of their skills

TIRUNELVELI: Apart from giving educational assistance to the tune of Rs.40 crore to minority students, the State Government has spent over Rs. 2.50 crore for imparting skill development to youth from this section, Rev. Fr. Vincent Chinnadurai, chairman of Tamil Nadu State Minorities Commission, has said.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Rev. Fr. Vincent said loan to the tune of Rs. 1.11 crore had been given through Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing Development Corporation (TAHDCO) to candidates from minority communities for starting business enterprises as they had undergone skill development programmes exclusively meant for them.

He said he had received a petition pertaining to the land dispute haunting the parishioners of Irudhayakulam for quite sometime.

“We'll raise this issue at an appropriate forum to get an appropriate solution,” he assured.

On the plea for relaxation of existing rigid norms relating to the construction of places of worship on private patta lands, he said that it would also be taken to the Chief Minister's attention since such policy matters would require lengthy discussion at the highest level, if any modification in the existing policy was needed.

During a review meeting, representatives from Muslim community submitted a petition to the Commission praying for 5 per cent reservation to Muslim students in education and employment from the existing 3.50 per cent reservation.

Another appeal said that reservation for representatives from minority communities should be made in the Syndicate Committee of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.

Member-Secretary of the Commission P.M. Basheer Ahmed, Collector M. Jayaraman, Vicar General of Palayamkottai Diocese Rt. Rev. Fr. S. Antonysamy and parish priest, St. Xavier's Cathedral, Rev. Fr. Antony A. Cruz were present.
