MLAs' version should have been heard: Naidu

Special Correspondent

TD chief faults Deputy Speaker for “selective leak” of footage to TV channels

Chandrababu Naidu opposes restrictions on media and creation of media point

‘Paladugu politicising attack on LSP chief by wrongly naming TDP MLA'

HYDERABAD: Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday said it would have been better if the suspended MLAs were given an opportunity to present their version before action was taken against them.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Naidu also found fault with the Assembly Deputy Speaker, N. Manohar, for what he called “edited and selective leak” of the footage of the incidents during the Governor's address to the TV channels. This was nothing but controlling of media, he said.

While the assault on Lok Satta MLA Jayaprakash Narayan and the incident inside the Assembly during the Governor's address should not have happened and was condemnable, he said his party MLAs had explained to him how they were disturbed after being ill-treated by police when they were staging a ‘dharna' at the entrance of the Assembly.

Letters to Speaker

Mr. Naidu said the Assembly was not being run properly. While his party raised the issue of fee reimbursement, four Ministers went out to the media point and made an announcement. He said he wrote several letters to former Speaker, N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, against restrictions on the media but to no avail. His party had opposed creation of media point and fixing of timings for holding media conferences.

Floor leaders and MLAs should enjoy the freedom to hold press conference at any time they want, either at legislature party office or the committee hall.

Had the TDP advice been heeded, the assault on Dr. Narayan could have been averted.

He said if the Chair was impartial and gave equal importance to the government and the Opposition and remained transparent, the House would run smoothly without any problem.

To a question, he said the Congress MLC, Paladugu Venkata Rao, was politicising the attack on Dr. Narayan by wrongly naming a TDP MLA in the incident.
