Area under mango cultivation goes up by 25,000 hectares to 1.4 lakh hectares State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation to focus on overall improvement
full bloom:The current season is described as ‘on season' for mango production. Mysore: A bumper harvest of mangoes is expected this year, thanks to the healthy and timely flowering of mango trees across the State. The Department of Horticulture has set a target of 10 lakh tonnes from the mango growing districts, even as the current season is being described as “on season” for mango production because of the prediction of a good yield. With the area under cultivation up by 25,000 hectares due to the concessions extended under National Horticulture Mission, nearly 1.4 lakh hectares are under mango cultivation in the State, according to figures made available by the department. A team of horticulturists from the department surveyed the crop status and noticed by and large uniform flowering in the State. Mango trees started blooming in December as the trees underwent “stress” from the cold wave that swept the State then. Normally, flowering in mango orchards usually takes place in November and December. The slight delay in flowering is attributed to the extended monsoon last year. Nevertheless, the officials are anticipating timely fruit formation and ripening this year. Official sources told The Hindu that the crop yield could even cross the target if the weather remains normal when the fruits start developing and powdery mildew disease and anthracnose (lesions developed on the fruits) do not break out. Last year, which was an “off year”, the total yield was only 1.5 lakh tonnes. The yield in 2009, which was an “on year”, was 8 lakh tonnes. The yield in the next two years could even cross 10 lakh tonnes, as 15,000 hectares had come under Alphonso mango cultivation in Dharwad district alone and the trees are expected to bloom next year, sources said. High quantity Aishwarya, an improved badami mango variety, may be available in slightly higher quantities in the current season as more number of trees is blossoming in places such as Kolar and Ramanagaram. The Government has formed a Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation to focus on the overall improvement in mango production and establishment of marketing linkages. Popular varieties of mango grown in the State include Raspuri, Malgoa, Badami, Saindoora, Mallika and Alphonso. Last year, the cost of premium varieties such as Badami, Mallika, Benusha and Malgoa was above Rs. 40 a kg. Varieties such as Neelam, Raspuri, Baiganapalli and Sanidoora were available for Rs. 30 a kg. Largest producer Srinivasapura in Kolar district is the largest mango producer and 50 per cent of the production in the State comes from Kolar district alone. Mangoes, according to horticulture sources, are likely to hit the markets in April this year. However, immature fruits that were artificially ripened may arrive even earlier. On an average, Karnataka produces nearly six to seven lakh tonnes of mangoes during “on season” and two to three lakh tonnes during “off season”.
