EMPOWERMENT:Revenue Minister K. P. Rajendran distributing a condition-free title-deed to a farmer at a ‘pattayamela' in Murickassery in Idukki district on Saturday.

KATTAPPANA: Revenue Minister K. P. Rajendran has said that the farmers in the abandoned Perinjamkutty hydroelectric project area having less than one acre of land will be getting title-deeds for it.

The Minister said that the Land Assignment Act of 2005 permits only those farmers having below one acre of land to be eligible for the title- deeds and the Act has to be amended to bring those having more than one acre of land in its purview.

He said that the government is taking steps to remove the hurdles and the process of distribution of title-deeds to 460 farmers of the abandoned project area would be completed soon. The minister said this was for the first time in the State that the farmers of an abandoned project site get title-deeds.

Inaugurating the third phase of the distribution of condition-free title deeds at Murickassery on Saturday, the minister said that about 65,000 farmers have been given the title-deeds. He said other farmers will receive the condition-free title deeds at the panchayat or village level functions soon.

The minister said that everyone was aware of the complex legal hurdles in connection with the land issue in the district, and boycotting the melas for political mileage was painful.

He said that Rs. 5 crore has been set apart for renovation of the village offices and another Rs 10 crore for construction of family quarters for the revenue department staff. The officials are being provided with the facilities to stay in the district with their families and this will improve their service to the people, he said.

The minister distributed condition-free title deeds to the farmers at four venues in Murickassery, Udumpanchola Rajakkad and Koottar as part of the distribution of 9,372 title-deeds in the third phase.

A farmer in the Perinjamkutty project area was also given the title-deed.
