3 new SEZs to attract Rs. 3,400 cr.

CHENNAI: Three Information Technology (IT)/IT Enabled Services (ITES) special economic zones (SEZs), of which two are in Madurai district and one in Tirunelveli, are expected to attract a total investment of Rs. 3,400 crore in five years.

Inaugurated by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi through videoconferencing on Saturday, the SEZs are likely to provide direct employment to 90,000 persons and indirect employment to 1.8 lakh persons. Of the two SEZs in Madurai, one has been set up in Ilanthaikulam and the other in Vadapalanji. The State government had allotted 28.91 acres for the Ilanthaikulam SEZ and 245.17 acres for the Vadapalanji SEZ, the Chief Minister said.

The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT), the promoter of the SEZ projects, had invested Rs.32 crore for the Ilanthaikulam SEZ. In respect of Vadapalanji, infrastructure had been provided at a cost of Rs. 15 crore.

In Tirunelveli district, the SEZ has come up in the Gangaikondan village over 500 acres. The ELCOT's investment would be Rs. 50 crore. Initially, infrastructure had been created at a cost of Rs. 13 crore over 100 acres.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated the State Data Centre, which had been set up in Perungudi near here. For the Data Centre project, the Union government's IT Department had provided Rs. 55.8 crore and the State government Rs. 5.16 crore.
