The likeable cast makes this ride worthwhile

Light fare:‘How Do You Know' is a pleasant enough way to spend an evening.

How Do You Know (English)

Cast: Jack Nicholson, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd

Director: James L. Brooks

This film comes with some heavy-duty star power.

There is Jack Nicholson, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd. Writer-director James L. Brooks has directed that multiple Oscar winner, As Good As It Gets.

But if you go into the theatre expecting some extraordinary stuff, you are bound to be disappointed.

However, if, like this reviewer, you go to see the film expecting nothing (the highly forgettable name helps), you will be pleasantly surprised. The exceedingly likeable cast is a major plus and propels the rather weak plot in the right direction.

Lisa is a softball player (that's a new one in rom-coms) who has retired from the team as she has crossed 30.

She needs to come to terms with her non-playing identity as well as choose between major league baseball pitcher Matty, and George, an executive who is in the middle of a criminal investigation. George has issues with his father, Charles.

We know where the film is going eons before it gets there.

The corporate malfeasance George is being investigated for doesn't make much sense, but that doesn't really matter. There is some Kramer vs. Kramer thing as well, which is just kind of put there.

It is only the cast that makes the ride worthwhile. Jack Nicholson has been playing Jack for so long that we probably will not recognise him if he were to try something else. He sleepwalks through Charles but it is still fun seeing that wicked grin and wiggly brows.

Reese Witherspoon plays Lisa with all her ‘legally blonde' charm, while Paul Rudd is all right as the luckless George.

Just like in the Little Fockers a couple of weeks ago, Owen Wilson is quite the star of the show with his laidback charm and his cutely crooked nose. Welcome back.

By the way, thanks to recession, the film makes a strong case for how cool it is to travel by bus. Way to go!

While nowhere in the league of As Good as it Gets, How Do You Know is a pleasant enough way to spend an evening.
