Two awarded life sentence

Bangalore: Principal District and Sessions Judge, Bangalore Rural, A.V. Chandrashekar, awarded life sentence to Annaiappa (55) and his son Babu (25) for the murder of Muniraju in Kumbarahalli in Anekal in July 2008. Fine of Rs. 5,000 each has been imposed on each of the convicted persons.

The provocation for murder is said to have been the differences they developed when Muniraju decided to place a photograph of B.R. Ambedkar in the village. It is said that Annaiappa and Babu had raised objection when Muniraju decided to place B.R. Ambedkar's photograph at A.K. Colony in Kumbarahalli. They had approached the panchayat to sort out their differences.

On July 7, 2008, Muniraju and his friends Srinivas and Suresh, who are Annaiappa's relatives, were returning home after making arrangements for the birthday party of their friend Gottegere Manjunath scheduled to be held on July 8. When they were passing through A.K. Colony, Annaiappa threw chilli powder on Muniraju, who fell on the ground. Then Annaiappa, his son Babu and a 17-year-old boy bludgeoned Muniraju.

Muniraju's brother Nagaraju filed a complaint with the Anekal Police on July 8. Two days later, the Anekal police arrested Annaiappa and Babu. A case was also registered against the 17-year-old boy, Annaipappa's wife Shantamma and Annaiappa's brother Sanjeevappa.

During the court hearing, Suresh supported the case of the prosecution and narrated in detail the sequence of events that led to the murder.

Shantamma and Sanjeevappa were acquitted.
