CUTTACK: The court of Additional Sessions Judge here has sentenced one Kulamani Nayak (50) to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years and pay a fine of Rs 7,000 for sexually exploiting the daughter of his servant. He was found guilty under several sections of the IPC and Section 3 of SC and ST (prevention of atrocities) Act The shocking case of the dalit girl was reported from Mahanga, about 50 km from here. Taking advantage of engaging the girl's father as his servant, Kulamani Nayak had established physical relationship with the girl and as a result the girl became pregnant. The court directed that at least Rs 6,000 of the fine amount collected be paid to the victim as she was entitled to compensation as per the rulings of the Supreme Court. The case of the poor girl was brought to light by the Cuttack-based Social organisation Project Swarajya. The NGO had rescued the victim from a private hospital in the city in May 2008 where she was left alone after delivering a still-born child. “After rescuing the girl, we lodged a complaint with Mahanga police who arrested Kulamani. Providing free legal support to the girl we ensured that the accused is punished under the law”, said Project Swarajya secretary Dolli Dash. Mr Dash said the victim was awarded a compensation of Rs 25,000 by the administration and the Collector had given an assurance that the girl would be given help under other schemes as well.
