Special Correspondent

Railways has set apart 15 to 18 acres of

land for the project

Railway Minister has been trying to acquire

the remaining land needed

MYSORE: Union Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa has affirmed that the proposed Railway Medical College and Hospital would be established in the city.

Speaking to presspersons during the Naada Rakshana Rally held in the city on Sunday, Mr. Muniyappa said the proposal was made in the 2009-10 railway budget. The Ministry of Railways was committed to it, he clarified. “We will ensure that the proposed Railway Medical College and Hospital is established in Mysore and will not allow it to be relocated elsewhere,” said Mr. Muniyappa. He said the Railways had about 15 to 18 acres of land and was willing to start the work on the prestigious project. But the Indian Medical Council rules stipulated that at least 25 acres was required to start a medical college and hospital.

The Minister said he was trying to initiate measures to acquire the remaining land for the project. He has been sounding his officials to interact with the State Government on the land acquisition process, which would benefit not only the city but people from other parts of the country as well. Meanwhile, pressure is being stepped up on the Railway authorities to expedite the Mysore-Thalassery Railway Line.

The Mysore-Thalassery Railway Line Action Committee has been planning to collect signatures from the public and submit it to Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. The committee said in a release that it had conducted a private survey for the railway line and estimated it to be around 145.5 km as against 298 km claimed by the Railways.
