dated February 22, 1961: (From an editorial) The tourist season

This is the season for foreign tourists and the number of visitors is growing year by year. The State of Maharashtra has organised a large exhibition at Bombay which is intended to promote tourism. It will be opened on the eve of the arrival in Bombay harbour of a tourist ship that is bringing a full complement of visitors to India. Six other States are taking part in the exhibition and displaying their handicrafts there. Though the Government of India is well aware of the importance of the tourist trade which ranks sixth as earner of foreign exchange, a good deal remains to be done before we get a real mass influx of tourists. It is true that this peninsula is in the path of world shipping and air routes but even so it cannot be claimed that it attracts tourists in the same way as Japan, Egypt, Italy or other countries who have made a determined effort to cater for visitors. In fact, it is the States who need to be wakened up to the importance of tourism and there is no reason why they should not separately advertise their wares in foreign countries. Kashmir is perhaps the only State which has done so in the past and other States have a great deal to learn from Kashmir in the matter of providing accommodation and facilities for tourists.
