LENSFED opposes new panchayat building rules

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: The Licensed Engineers and Supervisors Federation (LENSFED) has voiced concern over the recent modifications introduced by the State government to panchayat building rules.

At a press meet here on Monday, LENSFED district committee office-bearers said the new rules, in the long run, would scuttle infrastructural development of villages, besides helping the land mafia carry out unrestricted construction activities and land deals in benami names in the villages.

LENSFED district secretary P. Abdul Khader said the rules had classified the panchayats into two classes- category 1 and category 2.

“The new law allows flats up to 300 sq m and shops up to 150 sq m to be constructed in the category 2 panchayats without any prior permission from the authorities.” This, he said, would lead to complete lawlessness in the construction sector in the villages.

Mr. Khader said the government was yet to declare which were the category 1 and category 2 panchayats. “This makes the situation even more complicated,” he said.

LENSFED would stage dharnas in front of the civil stations in all the districts on Tuesday in protest against the new panchayat building rules.
