KOLKATA: One more accused in the Jnaneswari Express derailment was arrested from the Jhargram region of West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district late on Sunday. With this, 18 of the 23 accused persons, whose names appeared in the charge sheet submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), have been arrested. While one of the five remaining accused was killed during an encounter with the security forces, four others are absconding. PSBJC hand? One-hundred and fifty persons were killed on May 28 last when the Jnaneswari Express derailed between Khemasuli and Sardiha stations in the district and was rammed by a speeding goods train. Suspected supporters of the Police Santrash Birodhi Janasadharaner Committee had opened pandrol clips of the tracks. Tip-off According to Mukesh Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Jhargram police district, Babloo Rana was arrested from the Indraboni area based on tip-off. 7-day police custody “Sleuths of the CBI arrested him with the help of the district police. Mr. Rana was one of the several persons who had helped in opening of the pandrol clips on the fateful day. He was produced at the Jhargram court and was remanded in police custody for seven days,” Mr. Kumar said on Monday. Of the three main accused in the case, Bapi Mahato was arrested by the police from Ranchi in Jharkhand within a week of the incident, Umakanta Mahato was killed in an encounter in August last and Asit Mahato is absconding.
