BHUBANESWAR: People irrespective of party affiliation staged a dharna in front of headquarter of East Coast Railway on Tuesday demanding expeditious development of much-awaited Bolangir-Khurda Road railway line. Sanction of funds “Almost all the problems in land acquisition for Bolangir-Khurda Road railway line have been sorted out. Yet Indian Railways could not spend Rs. 100 crore last year,” said Rudra Madhab Ray, Member of Parliament from Kandhamal. He demanded sanction of Rs. 400 crore in railway budget for 2011-12 for construction up to Kuanria from 36 km to 112 km and simultaneous development should be undertaken from Bolangir side. Speaking on the occasion, veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) Shivaji Patnaik said, “the construction for the project started way back in 1994. After 17 years, not even 36 km of line is developed.” Mr. Patnaik said the proposed 289 km-railway line was considered to be crucial for development of downtrodden people of districts like Bolangir, Khurda, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal and Nayagarh. Even though the project was accorded priority sector recently, the pace of work was not satisfactory, he said. Biswanath Mohapatra of Nayagarh Action Committee, Bhabanish Satpathy and Rajendra Panda of Khurda Road Action Committee participated in the dharna.
