Bishop gets post in the Vatican

Special Correspondent

Joseph Kalathiparambil

Kozhikode: Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Joseph Kalathiparambil, Bishop of the Kozhikode diocese of the Syro-Malabar Church, secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of the Migrants and the Itinerant Peoples in the Vatican. Dr. Kalathiparambil was felicitated at a function organised by the Bishop House here on Tuesday. He has been the Bishop of the Kozhikode diocese since May 19, 2002. He fills the post vacated by Archbishop Agostino Marchetto in the Vatican on August 25.

Addressing a small gathering of priests, nuns and presspersons who had gathered at the Bishop House to greet him, Bishop Kalathiparambil recalled that he had already had a four-year stint in the Vatican early in his life as the Vice-Rector in Collegio San Paolo. That was soon after he completed his studies there.

He said the news of his new appointment was conveyed to him over the phone from the Vatican last Thursday.

Before being ordained the fifth Bishop of the diocese, Dr. Kalathiparambil had served as Chancellor of the Varapuzha Archdiocese from 1989 to 1996 and as its Vicar-General from 1996 to 2002.

Speaking at the function, Maxwell Noronha, former Bishop of the Kozhikode diocese, said the honour bestowed on Bishop Kalathiparambil was an honour for Kerala since he was the first to get that privilege.

Monsignor Vincent Arackal, Vicar-General of the diocese; Sr. Snehalatha; Fr. Marceline; and the former C.J. Robin spoke.

Archbishop Antonio Mario Velli is the president of the council, which is considered the Vatican equivalent of the Ministry of External Affairs.
