Kozhikode
Kozhikode: Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti (KVVES) president T. Nasirudeen and his driver, T. Mujeeb, were arrested by the police here on Tuesday in connection with a case of using abusive language and assaulting a Scheduled Caste woman. A police team, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) V.K. Abdul Khader, arrested both the accused and produced them before the Kozhikode First Class Judicial Magistrate Court. Magistrate G. Mahesh released them on conditional bail: that they appear before the investigating officer between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Wednesdays. The Nadakkavu police had earlier charged both with sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 295-B (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. The police said the case relates to Mr. Nasirudeen, who is chairman of Mercantile Bank, functioning under the management of the KVVES at Vyapara Bhavan here, abusing the director of a wing of the bank, by calling her caste name when she handed over her resignation to him on January 22. He allegedly twisted her hands and pushed her out of the room. He husband, a former member of the KVVS, was allegedly assaulted by Mr. Mujeeb when he tried to prevent Mr. Nasirudeen from beating his wife, the police said. The accused had approached the Kerala High Court for securing a bail. But the court on February 8 directed both of them to appear before the investigating officer. Mr. Abdul Khader is investigating the case.
