KOCHI: Police stations in the city will be getting a major facelift. The City Police plan to turn Town North Police Station into a ‘dream station'. “The idea is to give a total change to the perception of a police station. When constructed, this police station would look like a new generation bank - in appearance and public interface,” said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner. The tendering works of the police station will begin soon. The project includes providing public utility services at the police station. “This new station will be completely wi-fi enabled and paperless. It will also be women and children-friendly place. There will be facilities for taking photocopies, making phone calls, recreation area, snack bar and even a play area for children,” said M. Remesh Kumar, Circle Inspector, Town North. The proposed station will offer facilities similar to services offered by Janasevana Kendram. The proposal for the ‘dream station', which has been forwarded for approval of higher authorities, brings the existing two buildings – that of the police station and office of the Circle Inspector – into one building and altering the façade. As no major construction work is involved, the work could be completed in an year or so. The new proposal is coming close on the heels of Kadavanthra Police Station becoming eligible for ISO certification. “Even though Irinjalakuda and Kozhikode Town police stations have got ISO certification earlier, they were for the Janamaithri Suraksha Paddhati. This is for the first time in the country a police station is getting ISO certification for its total concept,” said Mr. Abraham. Kadavanthra police station has already been noted at the international level as the delegates who came for the Global Community Policing Conclave, held in the city last year, visited the station. Senior-most officials in the force, starting from Jacob Punnoose, Director General of Police; B. Sandhya, former Inspector General of Police, Ernakulam Range, and R. Sreelekha, present IG, have monitored the transformation of the Kadavanthra police station. The ISO certification is expected to be handed over to the station officials by the end of this month. “This work was done as part of raising the standards of all police stations in the city limits. We have changed the ambience of the two traffic police stations, as those are the places most frequented by the public. The attempt was to change the depressing atmosphere and make people at ease on reaching the station,” said Mr. Abraham.
