Manigandan stuns Jha

KOCHI: Madurai's S.S. Manigandan, seeded No. 61, upset LIC's eighth-seeded Grandmaster Sriram Jha in the fifth round of the Red Chilly Trophy National team chess championship here on Friday.

Meanwhile, the crucial meeting between defending champion Air India and last year's runner-up Petroleum Board, the top seed, ended in a 2-2 draw. The two teams are now in joint lead with nine points from five rounds.

Air India leads the table in the women's championship after a 3-1 verdict over Chennai's Chess Gurukkal, a team of under-15 girls. The Gurukul's G.K. Monisha, the 21st seed, caught the eye when she surprised fifth-seeded WGM S. Meenakshi in the fourth round.

The results:

Open (fifth round): Petroleum PSB 2 drew with Air India 2 (Neelotpal Das drew with Tejas Bakre, Abhijeet Gupta bt Chandrasekhar Gokhale, S. Arun Prasad drew with Swayangsu Satyapragyan, M.R. Venkatesh lost to G.B. Joshi).

Indian Railways ‘B' 2 drew with Indian Railways ‘A' 2 (Vikramaditya Kulkarni drew with Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury, K. Ratnakaran drew with Arghyadip Das, Suvrajit Saha drew with R.R. Laxman, Saptarshi Roy drew with M.S. Thejkumar).

LIC 2.5 bt Madurai 1.5 (Sriram Jha lost to S.S. Manigandan, K. Dinesh Sharma bt S. Ganesh Babu, Anup Deshmukh drew with M. Ibrahim Dusthageer, V. Rajith bt R. Ganesh).
