Mumbai all set to host Lakme Fashion Week

NEW DELHI: Lakme Fashion Week this year will see over 78 designers from across the country showcase different fashion sensibilities and interpretations during the five-day event in Mumbai.

Summer/Resort-2011 opens in Mumbai on March 11. To provide access to buyers and fashion enthusiasts, LFW has launched an online live streaming channel on its website www.lakmefashionweek.co.in.

Addressing a press conference in the Capital on Thursday, Lakme Lever CEO Anil Chopra said the event will offer a seamless display of avant garde collections to an ever increasing number of stakeholders including designers, buyers and fashion connoisseurs.

Noting that LFW seeks to give impetus to the business of fashion in the country, IMG South Asia managing director Ravi Krishnan said it will address the fashion needs of the fraternity and keep it at par with international fashion extravaganzas.

This year, Hyderabad designer Anand Kabra has collaborated with Lakme Studio to demonstrate the partnership between fashion and hair.

“Sleek, the New Mystique” is a challenging concept for Anand.

“The show gives me an opportunity to showcase versatility in my art. I have introduced the fifth look. For the summer resort collection, I have come with ethnic wear, a modern take on saris and lounge suits. I have played in terms of scale and size with Ikat print weaves to give a tribal twist. The collection is essentially for archetypal Indian women who go to work, party and holidays.”

Hailing from Hyderabad, Anand had the city's historical grandeur in mind while creating garments.

“Hyderabad is in my conscious and I always come with Nizami silhouettes.”

Designer Rocky S's summer line has a young fresh peppy look.

“Even styling has been done in a different manner. It is a nice affordable wear. As I believe in the comfort factor, the dresses are easy to wear. Pink, yellow and blue are the predominant colours.”

This season will celebrate the return of Anamika Khanna on the LFW runway after three seasons, along with other renowned designers like Anita Dongre, Manish Malhotra, Satya Paul, Shantanu Nikhil and Sabyasachi.

Japanese flavour

To give a Japanese flavour to the fashion week, LFW and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan, have jointly come up with a cross-cultural exchange initiative, “Tokyoeye”, that will exhibit the works of eight Japanese designers.

Renowned designers Tamae Hirokawa, Motonari Ono and Sara Arai will showcase their collections at a show on March 11.
