Government employees lathicharged

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Members of the Tamil Nadu Government Employees' Association (TNGEA) and the Road Workers' Association were lathicharged for allegedly breaking police cordon and trying to enter the Assembly/Secretariat complex here on Friday. According to police sources, members of the associations, who were on a relay fast in front of the State Guest House in Chepauk in support of various demands, suddenly marched along the Wallajah Road towards the new Secretariat around noon on Friday.

They broke police cordon at three places and tried to enter the premises through the public entry gate.

No mood to listen

“Though we tried to stop them and offered to take a team of representatives inside the Secretariat, they were in no mood to listen.

Traffic was also disrupted on one side of the road...we had no other option but to use mild force to chase them away,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) M. Shakeel Akhter said. Some agitators and police personnel were injured in the melee. The Triplicane police registered cases against members of both the associations.

The relay fast was withdrawn. Later in the day, some representatives of the TNGEA met the Chief Minister's Secretary and submitted a petition, the sources added.
