Court issues notice to Janardhan Reddy

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday ordered issue of notice to Tourism Minister G. Janardhan Reddy on a public interest litigation petition against the failure of the Minister to appear before the judicial magistrate at Sandur in Bellary district despite repeated issuance of non-bailable warrants.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice A.S. Bopanna passed the order on a PIL petition filed by G.R. Mohan, an advocate.

“Why do you bring a bad name? The whole country knows that he [Mr. Reddy] has not gone to court. Why is it not made sweet and simple (by appearing before the court)? Also, it leaves us (the court) worried,” the Court observed while adjourning the case by four weeks.

The non-bailable warrants had been issued in connection with a case pertaining to alleged altering of the border by Mr. Reddy's mining company.

‘Expedite probe'

The Karnataka High Court on Thursday directed the Bangalore Rural district Superintendent of Police to expedite the investigation of a criminal case registered against C.M. Fayiz, son of the former Union Minister, C.M. Ibrahim, and 25 others for allegedly ransacking a warehouse and office of a company operating a chain of supermarkets.

Justice B.S. Patil issued the direction after the Superintendent of Police submitted a report to the court that a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the accused persons on February 22, based on the complaint by Subhiksha Trading Service Ltd.

The Subhiksha Trading Service Ltd, on February 22, complained to the court that the Avalahalli police, under whose jurisdiction the warehouse is situated, refused to register a case in writing about the incident of the alleged ransacking on February 11.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fayiz's counsel on Thursday filed an application to be a party to the petition stating that the company had already handed back the possession of the building, which he had leased out to the company, to him a few months ago.

However, the police in their report to the court stated that the petitioner-company was in possession of the property with their goods when they visited the building on February 11.

While directing the parties to maintain status quo on possession of the building, the High Court adjourned hearing on the case to next week.
