TIRUCHI: The Rotary Club of Tiruchi Shakthi recently paid host to a team of sixteen women cyclists from diverse corners of India, all united by a mutual love for adventure, pedalling their way across four states to promote a ‘greener, cleaner, and healthier India'. The ‘Go Green Girls' expedition halted in the city for a day enroute from Kolkata to Kanyakumari.

The 35-day cycling expedition organised by the Women Adventure Network of India (WANI) and powered by BSA Hercules has covered a distance of approximately 3000 kilometres. The team interacted with Club members and students of ‘Tiruchi Plus'.

“It was an inspirational experience for all of us just to meet the women who are all achievers in their own right. The presence of Bhagwathi Ojha from Baroda, a 76-year-old cyclist was truly astounding,” said Savitri Sivakumar, Secretary, Rotary Club of Tiruchi Shakti.

The eclectic ensemble of mountaineers, adventurers, and marathon runners is led by mother-daughter duo, Vasumathi Srinivasan and Smitha Srinivasan, Limca Record holders, for first mother-daughter team to climb a peak. Other high fliers included Reena Dharmsaktu, first Indian woman to ski to South Pole, and Mount Everest summiteers Major Ashwini Pawar, Krushnna Patil and Kavitha Burathoki.

The students were treated to a video presentation by Ms. Reena on her expedition to the South Pole. She shared insights on the challenges in the journey and described the moment of pride while hoisting the Indian flag at the South Pole. The expedition has traversed West Bengal, Orissa, and Andhra Pradesh before reaching Tamil Nadu. The group has covered 100 kilometres a day with five to seven hours of cycling, while squeezing in presentations at schools and colleges. The tour is scheduled to wind up at Kanyakumari on February 28.
