10th convocation to be held on Monday SALEM: Salem Periyar University will soon emerge a research institution in various important fields with various central technical and scientific agencies and University Grants Commission sanctioning a sum of Rs. 1.43 crore, said its Vice-Chancellor K. Muthuchelian. Elaborating the arrangements for the 10th convocation to be held here on Monday, the Vice-Chancellor said that the sum would be funding 17 research projects. In addition, 39 teachers had submitted their projects for further funding. He said that under the 11th Plan, a sum of Rs. 14 crore had been sanctioned, of which Rs.7.2 crore had already been received as first instalment. The University's general development would be taken up for Rs. 5 crore. Mr. Muthuchelian further said that a new hostel for girls and boys would be constructed. Tenders had been called for the construction of buildings for the University's constituent colleges at Pennagaram and Harur in Dharmapuri district. These colleges and the one at Mettur would be receiving funds from the government for 5 years. The university's convocation would be attended by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala who would confer degrees on 37,575 students from 74 affiliated colleges and Periyar Institute of Distance Education. Dr. A Gnanam, former VC, Bharathidasan University, would deliver convocation address, the Vice-Chancellor added.
