Walk-out over Hinduja power plant issue

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam, CPI and CPI(M) staged a walk-out in the Legislative Council on Saturday protesting against the government's soft stance towards Hindujas which failed to set up a power plant at Visakhapatnam and ‘lack of clarity' in the government's response.

Raising the issue during the Question Hour, Leader of Opposition Dadi Veerabhadra Rao (TDP) said over a decade ago, the government had given at a nominal cost over 1,100 acres of land and other facilities for the Hinduja thermal power plant when it offered to give 100 per cent power to the State. A power purchase agreement was also concluded but the project did not take off.

However, instead of recovering land from the Hindujas, the government was now considering their offer to sell only 25 per cent of power to the State and the remaining 75 per cent at the market price. Mr. Puvvada Nageswara Rao (CPI) and Mr.Ch.Sitaramulu (CPI(M) also flayed the government.

Minister for Information Technology Ponnala Laxmaiah's assertion that the government would not compromise on the interest of the State however did not convince the members.
