Corporation opens blood banks

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Friday opened a blood bank each at its diagnostic laboratory in Perambur and the 24-hour maternity hospital in Kodambakkam.

Inaugurating the facilities, Mayor M.Subramanian said the civic body was in the process of setting up 24-hour blood banks at nine more locations across the city at a total cost of Rs.22 lakh. They are being established at the maternity hospitals in R.K.Nagar, Ilango Nagar, Ayanavaram, Shenoy Nagar, Mirsahibpet, Sanjeevaroyanpet and Velachery, the blood testing centre at Valluvar Kottam and Communicable Diseases Hospital, Tondiarpet. The blood banks opened on Friday have been set up at a cost of Rs.6 lakh. In a release, the Mayor said that the city needs nearly 1.2 lakh units of blood every year. Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan was present.
