CHENNAI: Several lapses were found by a judge of the Madras High Court during an annual inspection of the Saidapet court here on Saturday. During the inspection, which was conducted by a Portfolio Judge in any subordinate court in Chennai after nearly 22 years, Justice Elipe Dharma Rao found that many non-bailable warrants and FIRs were pending in the courts for long. The judge directed the Magistrates and the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, R. Killivalavan, to conduct regular meetings with the police and see that the pending warrants and FIRs are disposed of as per law, a High Court official said. 44,000 cases pending There are six courts on the Saidapet premises. Nearly 44,000 cases are pending before them. It was found that valuable and non-valuable property remained in the courts even though the cases concerned were disposed of long ago. Instructions were given to dispose them of. Working conditions of judicial officers were very bad affecting not only them but also the litigant public, staff and advocates. Mr. Justice Elipe Dharma Rao also visited the sub-jail on the premises and interacted with the inmates. There are 60 inmates. He also held discussions with the Taluk Legal Services Committee, headed by the IV Metropolitan Magistrate, Bhoopalan, and the legal aid counsel. The judge will inspect Egmore Magistrate Courts on Sunday.
