ERODE: The second phase of pulse polio immunisation campaign held in the district on Sunday received good response with a large number of parents brining their children to administer polio drops.

Over two lakh children aged below five were immunised against polio during the second phase, health officials said. More than 1,200 camps had been set up in various parts of the district including government hospitals, primary health centres, health sub-centres, noon meal centres and schools to administer polio drops. Camps were also set up in the bus stands and railway stations for the benefit of children travelling with their parents.

Over 5,000 officials from various departments including medical, noon meals, revenue, education, social welfare and local administration, and volunteers from community welfare organisations supplemented the efforts of the officials from the Department of Public Health.

The district administration deputed additional teams to administer polio drops to children in hamlets located in the hilly areas in Sathyamnagalam block. Teams were also sent to identify children of the migrant labourers in the district and immunise them against polio. Mobile units were pressed into service for the benefit of children living in the remote villages. The administration had allocated more than 120 vehicles to effectively carry out the immunisation programme.

A door-to-door exercise would be conducted to administer polio drops to left out children, officials said.
