Says rubber-based industries have huge scope

PATHANAMTHITTA: Public sector undertakings (PSUs) in the State registered a cumulative profit of Rs.1,000 crore in the past five years, Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran has said.

He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a latex factory of Plantation Corporation of Kerala Ltd. (PCKL) at Kodumon, near here, on Sunday.

A good number of PSUs were facing closure threat when the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government assumed charge 57 months ago. The government could successfully streamline the functioning of all the PSUs and convert them into profit-making ones, he said.

More PSUs opened

The government had effectively utilised the profit from various PSUs to start more public-sector ventures in different parts of the State and the latex factory at Kodumon was one such initiative. PCKL's profit had crossed Rs.100 crore as on January 31 in the current fiscal, an all-time record, he said.

The Minister stressed the need for concentrating on production of value-added agro products. It would generate more employment opportunities. Rubber-based industries had a huge scope in the State, the Minister said.

PCKL Chairman T.J. Anjelos presided. K.C. Rajagopalan, MLA; P. Vijayamma, district panchayat vice-president; P.J. Ajayakumar, G. Gopinathan Nair, Vilangupara Sukumaran, trade union leaders, and K. Subair Khan, PCKL Managing Director, also spoke.
