TIRUPATI: Strong views were expressed by the cross section of the society at a round-table held in Tirupati on Sunday to discuss the ways and means to root out the scourge of corruption which the speakers felt has of late taken such deep roots that besides eating the vitals of the country, it is causing the country an indelible shame among the international community. Judicial officers, lawyers, academics, media representatives, intelligentsia were among those who participated in the round-table conducted in the S.V. University Senate Hall here under the joint aegis of the HMTV and the Forum Against Corruption. Justice Ambati Lakshmana Rao, former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, expressed anguish that there was hardly any department, including the democratic institutions in the country, where the cancer of corruption had not spread and said if it was allowed to continue, it would not only drain out all the hard-earned money of the taxpayers but hardly leave any money for development and social security activities. K. Ramachandramurthy, Chief Editor of the HMTV, said it is a humble beginning made by a small segment of the media in collaboration with various like-minded organisations to launch a fight against corruption. Good augury Srinivasa Reddy, representing the Association for Promotion of Social Activities, said that a media organisation taking a lead in launching a crusade against corruption is a good augury and expected a more pro-active role by the media. Some of the prolific views expressed by speakers at the round-table were: Mere arrest of the delinquent is not enough without confiscating the entire ill-gotten wealth involved; stringent punishment and punitive action against those involved; social boycott of all those declared corrupt; and setting-up of ‘watch-dog' panels at all levels to check and report corruption etc. Among the other speakers were former Speaker of State Assembly A. Eswara Reddy, former VC of SPMVV Sarojamma, Rajendra, leader of SVU Teachers Association, Lakshmana Reddy, founder, Jana Chaithanya Vedika, besides a number of students.
