Enumeration of homeless people today

Special Correspondent

Census will be carried out on ships docked at port, Naval Base and shipyard.

KOCHI: The enumeration of the homeless population in the city as part of Census 2011 will be held on Monday.

Several squads of enumerators will fan out after nightfall to take a headcount of the people living in the city without a roof of their own, and to collect their personal and family data. The number of homeless people has leapfrogged in the city in the recent times as a direct outcome of the arrivals of large contingents of migrant labourers from other States. Besides migrant labourers, the city is now home to a large population of beggars who arrive mainly from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Census officials said the homeless people's enumeration would be taken up late in the evening as they would be at work or wandering about the city during the daytime.

The population enumeration will also be carried out on the ships docked at the port, the Naval Base and at the Cochin Shipyard. This is to bring to record the people on board the ships, such as crewmembers and sailors. The enumeration will be facilitated by the Cochin Port Trust.
