Huge cache of arms, munition found in Bengal

KOLKATA: Ahead of the elections to the Sate Assembly, a huge cache of arms was recovered from a pump house in Khaspur village in West Bengal's Bardhaman district late on Saturday night.

This was followed by the recovery of 180 rounds of ammunition from the banks of a pond in Rajarhat in North 24 Parganas district on Sunday.

“Acting on a tip-off we raided the pump house of Zahid Sheikh in Khaspur village. Eleven long barrelled guns including three regular guns and eight muskets, four pistols, four daggers, 43 rounds of ammunition and about 40 kg of explosives were recovered,” Bardhaman district Superintendent of Police Humayun Kabir told The Hindu over phone.

Accused absconding

Mr. Kabir said that Shiek was absconding and his political affiliations were being investigated by the police.

The raids being conducted to seize all illegal weapons will continue, he added.

Meanwhile, the source of the ammunition recovered near a pond in Rajarhat remains a mystery.

An octogenarian was walking along the road beside the pond when he noticed a handbag dumped beside a pond.
