Collector inspects Corporation's maternity centre in Tirupur

Staff Reporter

Tirupur: It is now almost three months since Collector C. Samayamoorthy directed the Corporation officials to look into the allegations of corruption that came up against the Corporation-run T. S. Kandasamy Chettiar Maternity Centre, and submit a report to him immediately.

But the Corporation Commissioner is yet to submit any report to Mr. Samayamoorthy.

Report

This created some embarrassing moments when the Collector conducted a surprise inspection at the institution on Sunday and questioned Commissioner R. Jayalakshmi about the report not being filed. The Corporation health officials assured the Collector that they would file the report at the earliest.

The allegations were raised by Nallur Consumers Welfare Association (NCWA) in its petition submitted directly to the Collector in December last. Some of the complaints included collection of ‘hospital charges' from those who get admitted for delivery despite the institution coming under government sector, and duty doctor visiting the hospital only once a week, among others.

Most of the time, deliveries were taken care of by maternity assistants, NCWA president Shanmugasundaram had pointed out in the memorandum given to Mr. Samayamoorthy.

Name board

The Collector expressed surprise at the hospital not having a name board outside the premises.

“Put up a name board to increase the utilisation by the public, as they could mistake the hospital for a private one,” Mr. Samayamoorthy said.

The Collector also instructed the medical officer of the hospital to always treat the patients with kindness to win their confidence.
