Birmingham City wins League Cup

LONDON: Birmingham City won the English League Cup football here on Sunday, defeating favourites Arsenal 2-1 to record only its second-ever major trophy — the 1963 League Cup being its only previous triumph.

A late goal by substitute Obafemi Martins sealed victory for Birmingham after Robin van Persie had equalised Nikola Zigic's opener for Birmingham City.

Defeat means Arsenal is without a trophy since the 2005 FA Cup victory over Manchester United.

The result:

Birmingham City 2 (Zigic 28, Martins 89) bt Arsenal 1 (van Persie 39). — Agencies
