Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) opened its Malappuram special centre at Perinthalmanna, near here, on Monday.

The first classes for MBA and BALLB programmes took place at an ‘in-house' function in which Education Minister M.A. Baby; V. Sasikumar, MLA; AMU Vice-Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis; and AMU officials took part.

AMU Registrar V.K. Abdul Jaleel welcomed the gathering. Officer on Special Duty H.S.A. Yahya read out a report. Former Education Minister Nalakath Soopy, AMU court members Sayed Basheer Ali Shihab and P.A. Ibrahim spoke.

Prof. Azis described the special centre as a great achievement for the State. AMU will start classes at its Murshidabad (West Bengal) special centre on March 6.

The West Bengal Chief Minister and Mr. Baby had taken special interest in getting AMU centres for their respective States, Prof. Azis said.

Prof. Yahya said Urdu should be given priority at the AMU centre so that Urdu teachers in the State would get jobs.

The AMU team that attended the function included Ekram Husain; M. Shabbir, Dean of the Faculty of Law; Javed Akhtar, Dean, Faculty of Business; A.K. Durrani, Media Advisor of AMU; Parwaiz Mustajab, Controller of Examinations and Admissions; Yasmeen Jalal Beg, Finance Officer; Khalid Khan, Chairman, Department of Business Studies; and Iqbal Ali, Chairman of the Department of Law.
