Ranespeak

Maharashtra Industries Minister Narayan Rane rightly said at a seminar on women's rights that women should take care of their home and children first. I fully appreciate his views because many social problems can be solved if children are brought up properly by their mothers. India's culture has been thrown to the winds with people increasingly aping the west.

A mother has every right to rule her home. She can bring forth excellent results. The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

That Mr. Rane is unaware of the political processes and feminist discourses going on in the country is a pity. He contradicts himself by asking women to seek positions through merit as Sonia Gandhi and Indira Gandhi did. Does he not know that all women in this country do not have the privilege to pursue a liberal education of European standards, and that they face many social stigmas which the women of the Gandhi-Nehru family would not have faced given their elitist family background?

Mr. Rane sounded absolutely right when he said Sonia Gandhi and Indira Gandhi do not owe their positions of eminence to reservation. Well said! But it is not as if they achieved their positions exclusively on merit and mettle. In fact, they owe their success to something more privileged than simple reservation. They had the advantage of dynastic reservation.

A ‘sanskriti' that does not recognise a woman as an individual need not be preserved. Preserving a ‘sanskriti' is not the obligation of women alone. In the name of ‘sanskriti,' patriarchy has chained, exploited and enslaved women for centuries. Leaders like Mr. Rane who have such obscurantist views should not be allowed to remain in power in a democracy.

Palakkad
