Crematorium commissioned

Staff Reporter

DINDIGUL: A gasifier crematorium, constructed at a cost of Rs.1.35 crore at Vedapatti in Dindigul district, was inaugurated by Municipal Chairman R. Natarajan on Monday.

Talking to presspersons, he said that the Dindigul Municipality would hand over the crematorium to Nagal Nagar Crematorium Trust for maintenance. Gas generated from it would be supplied to a chamber through eight pipes to burn the bodies in a short time. Sprawling over two acres, it would have a burning chamber, big hall for conducting rituals, office room, prayer hall, security room, six toilets, two bathrooms, and spacious parking lot. Municipal Commissioner R. Lakshmi said that initially Rs.92 lakh were sanctioned for the project and Rs.38 lakhs was later given to complete it. Dindigul MLA K. Balabarathi contributed Rs.5 lakh from her MLA constituency development fund.

Some minor works were pending and once completed, the crematorium would be handed over to the trust, said officials. The project was conceived at an estimated cost of Rs.60 lakh in 2007, but the work started only in 2008.

With sharp escalation of prices of raw materials, the municipality had submitted revised proposals to the government and raised the project cost. This is the second crematorium for the town. There is an electric crematorium at R.M. Colony.

Two parks

Children's parks have been established at M.V.M. Nagar and Nehruji Nagar, each constructed at a cost of Rs.30 lakh each. Inaugurating the parks in the evening, the Municipal Chairman said that the first park was handed over to respective residents' associations for maintenance. He also laid a foundation stone for a basketball stadium to be constructed at a cost of Rs.30 lakh at R.M. Colony.
