Long march:A caravan of local cows, which were brought from Chittoor and Kadapa under the banner of ‘Sudarsana Sena', Madanapalle, being taken to Tirumala on Tuesday.

TIRUPATI: Barely within two days of the TTD sending out an appeal to the devotees to donate to it only locally-bred cows instead of the hybrid breeds, a batch of 120 local cows of different species reached Tirupati on Tuesday en route to Tirumala, the abode of Lord Venkateswara.

TTD's appeal came in the wake of a view that emerged of late among the spiritual circles that only cow milk and its derivatives like butter, ghee, curd etc. must be used by the TTD in performing the daily rituals to the deities in its temples, as clearly laid down by Agama Sasthras.

In response to the TTD's appeal, a band of farmers from the Chittoor and Kadapa districts clad in dhotis and sporting the holy ‘namams' on their foreheads led a caravan of cows into Tirupati. They were brought on board a convoy of mini-vans traversing a distance of over 100 km under the banner of ‘Sudarsana Sena', Madanapalle.

As the caravan passed through the town and reached Alipiri, the foot of the hills, residents of the temple town and the passersby watched the scene with amusement while many offered prayers to the ‘Go Matas' which were on their way to join the TTD cowshed—the S.V. Dairy Farm.

After a brief halt and pujas at Alipiri, the convoy carrying the cows meandered their way up the Tirumala Ghat Road where they were received by TTD officials and the priests.
