Mumbai: The nine-car suburban service of Western Railway has completed 50 years of operation. The nine-car trains were introduced on March 2, 1961, and have rendered continuous services since then, ferrying lakhs of passengers day in and day out. Initially, three-car EMU suburban trains used to ply on the Mumbai suburban route, followed by six-car EMU trains. Eight-car trains, too, served the city for a brief period. To cope with the increasing demands of the city and with the expansion of the suburbs, the need for longer EMU trains was felt and the nine-car trains were introduced. But the city's growth always outpaces the increased train capacity, and now Western Railway has 12-car and even 15-car trains. The latter have been introduced for the first time in the country, an official release said. — PTI
