Deputy Commissioner Gulbarga: Deputy Director-General of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and State Informatics Officer A. Venkatesan has said a full-fledged state-of-the-art data centre will come up in Khanija Bhavan in Bangalore for facilitating e-governance. He was speaking at a workshop on e-governance in Gulbarga University here on Tuesday. It was organised by the Central University of Karnataka. Mr Venkatesan said that the NIC has entered into a tie-up with the Reliance Communications for the establishment of the networking centre and other infrastructure facilities in the proposed data centre. He stressed the need to introduce e-governance in all the government departments and said that it would help curb corruption and bring in a qualitative change in administration. It would help people get their grievances redressed from their homes without visiting government offices. Citing the example of e-tax payment facility, he said that paying taxes has become easier than before because it can be done online without visiting the office of the commercial taxes. According to Mr. Venkatesan, the NIC proposes to establish citizen data hub in which basic details of all citizens would be stored and through this hub, the unique IDs would be given. Referring to the difficulties and hurdles faced in the maintenance of the land records in the State, Mr. Venkatesan said the NIC and State Informatics were trying to provide the permanent solution through e-governance. He added that the NIC has been asked to computerise the district and taluk courts in the State. Earlier, Deputy Commissioner of Gulbarga district K. Vishal inaugurated the workshop. On the occasion, he said it is important to maintain secrecy about personal information of citizens and information pertaining to land records in the Bhoomi and Nemmadi projects. He also stressed the importance of maintaining a backup for the data fed in these two programmes, which would come in handy when the system develops technical problems. Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Karnataka S. Chandrasekhar said it is necessary to understand how e-governance would help higher education. A large number of faculty members of the university participated.
