Thiruvananthapuram: The political acrimony which led to a clash between the ruling and Opposition benches in the Corporation council on Monday vaporised as councillors vied with each other to demand better pay and perks for themselves on Tuesday. The wish list presented by members included enhanced honorarium, travel allowance, telephones, exclusive parking facilities on the Corporation office premises and transportation to attend meetings of the council and the District Planning Committee, besides a council lounge and library. First-time members were more vocal than their experienced counterparts in raising demands. The same member who highlighted the need for an exclusive parking lot for councillors' cars was heard pleading inability to pay his telephone dues. He even went to the extent of describing a councillor's lot as ‘worse than a beggar's.' Mayor K. Chandrika said the demand for enhanced pay and perks would be brought to the notice of the government. The suggestion was greeted with loud thumping of desks by councillors across the political spectrum. She said the construction of a new block inside the Corporation office premises would begin soon. The new complex, she added, would have adequate space for parking and other facilities.
